Let's roll.
00:04:18.872 --> 00:04:19.281
Hi.
00:04:20.016 --> 00:04:24.357
We are recording with the ageless athlete podcast this morning.
00:04:24.786 --> 00:04:27.884
Normally I speak to one or two people today.
00:04:27.944 --> 00:04:35.607
I am blessed and fortunate to have, not one, not two, but five incredible mountain biking athletes on the show.
00:04:36.307 --> 00:04:41.317
Just to start off it, if you guys can please tell me your names.
00:04:42.601 --> 00:04:50.031
tell me where you're from and also share what you had for breakfast this morning.
00:04:53.182 --> 00:04:53.432
right.
00:04:53.471 --> 00:04:54.432
Um, we can start with him.
00:04:55.612 --> 00:04:56.271
I'm laughing.
00:04:56.651 --> 00:04:58.232
Uh, my name's Henrietta Stern.
00:04:58.262 --> 00:05:00.281
I'm from Pacific Grove, California.
00:05:00.711 --> 00:05:09.112
I had a little pre breakfast of oatmeal and a smoothie, but the main event was a delicious frittata made by Jenna.
00:05:09.887 --> 00:05:11.228
my name's Jessica.
00:05:11.257 --> 00:05:13.348
I'm from San Jose, California.
00:05:13.867 --> 00:05:15.997
And I did have a pre breakfast as well.
00:05:17.158 --> 00:05:21.177
Um, I had a little bit of granola with slices of banana in it with milk.
00:05:21.218 --> 00:05:24.307
Um, and Jenna's awesome frittata.
00:05:26.682 --> 00:05:32.952
Alexis Morgan, I'm from Santa Cruz and I had virtually the same breakfast as Jessica.
00:05:33.583 --> 00:05:37.963
Blueberries as well and frittata for my brunch.
00:05:38.182 --> 00:05:38.473
Yes.
00:05:40.942 --> 00:05:52.642
I'm Lisa from Salinas, California and I had my own version of Nut and seed and coconut cereal this morning, and then the frittata, the infamous frittata.
00:05:55.583 --> 00:06:01.423
Good morning, I'm Jenna, I live in Aptos, California, and, uh, yeah, kind of going with the flow.
00:06:01.663 --> 00:06:06.043
I had to have a little something before I hit the trail this morning, and then frittata with the group.
00:06:06.552 --> 00:06:08.463
She's the infamous maker of the frittata.
00:06:11.192 --> 00:06:11.673
Alright,
00:06:11.687 --> 00:06:14.658
I'm so glad you guys could be together.
00:06:15.408 --> 00:06:20.088
I am really missing out on me, me not being there in person myself.
00:06:20.528 --> 00:06:29.648
And, uh, thanks also for sharing this little sneak peek into, let's say your, uh, nutrition strategies.
00:06:30.288 --> 00:06:34.038
There's a pre breakfast involved and then there's this proper breakfast.
00:06:34.627 --> 00:06:47.286
Uh, hopefully, you know, this, uh, this recording will be more fun and, and not, not a grueling, uh, grueling race where you, uh, will need to, uh, refuel again during, during the conversation.
00:06:48.947 --> 00:06:51.127
Let's start with you, Jessica.
00:06:51.197 --> 00:06:55.197
Jessica, thank you again for bringing this great group together.
00:06:55.569 --> 00:07:10.608
Before you became a mountain biking athlete full time and all the other things you do, you left this place we, we met at, where we worked together in, uh, in the tech industry in Silicon Valley.
00:07:11.288 --> 00:07:18.598
And now you've made it, made it a mission to, uh, empower women through mountain biking full time.
00:07:19.204 --> 00:07:26.209
Can you share a bit more about what you do and what made you take up this transition.
00:07:27.014 --> 00:07:28.115
uh huh, sure, yeah.
00:07:28.579 --> 00:07:45.990
Um, yeah, so Kush, I had the pleasure of working with you and at Airbnb, um, yeah, it was, uh, I worked in the corporate world for 20 plus years, left it at the end of last year to, to do this mission of mine full time, which is empowering women through mountain biking.
00:07:46.343 --> 00:07:50.223
all of us here, we mountain bike, and it's something we're extremely passionate about.
00:07:50.644 --> 00:07:54.233
Um, it is something that can be challenging, mountain biking.
00:07:54.533 --> 00:07:58.754
And this sport is very intimidating for females.
00:07:58.923 --> 00:08:02.853
So, I'm a mountain bike coach, and I've taught both men and women.
00:08:03.314 --> 00:08:08.324
And, um, women are more thoughtful when they mountain bike, um, when they approach things.
00:08:08.858 --> 00:08:13.629
and they can be more fearful of getting hurt and tackling something that might look scary.
00:08:14.119 --> 00:08:18.629
Um, and so, um, you know, my mission is to empower women through mountain biking.
00:08:18.649 --> 00:08:27.007
Um, a lot of times I talk to women that have never mountain biked before, and they look at me in their first sentence as always, well, I don't want to break my bones.
00:08:27.137 --> 00:08:32.697
Um, and I can tell you, that, you know, we, we love what we do and we're not here to break our bones.
00:08:33.677 --> 00:08:40.947
Um, our entire mission really is to inspire confidence in girls and women through mountain biking and to build a community around this.
00:08:41.128 --> 00:08:43.288
So, um, I won't lie.
00:08:43.317 --> 00:08:45.288
This is a pretty tough sport.
00:08:45.927 --> 00:08:49.628
But what I love about this sport is, is that it teaches people grit.
00:08:50.518 --> 00:08:51.918
Perseverance and courage.
00:08:52.207 --> 00:08:57.038
Um, I can tell you, I'm inspired every day when I take girls and women on the trail.
00:08:57.457 --> 00:09:04.248
Um, they see a feature they're nervous about, um, and then they try and try it, and then they overcome this fear and they successfully tackle it.
00:09:05.107 --> 00:09:16.405
thanks for clarifying this right away that, you did not undertake the sport to break bones, but you did it to, uh, go out in the outdoors and test your mettle and all of that.
00:09:16.615 --> 00:09:23.316
Any other common misconceptions you want to clear right away about the sport of mountain biking?
00:09:23.475 --> 00:09:24.035
Absolutely.
00:09:24.505 --> 00:09:34.676
Um, misconceptions, um, well, I mean, Um, I guess when you say misconceptions, I mean, it's a really fun sport.
00:09:34.706 --> 00:09:39.076
Um, mountain biking can be, you know, a variety of different terrains.
00:09:39.364 --> 00:09:49.408
for example, you know, sometimes a trail, can be really mild or flat, um, and, you know, when, when, uh, sometimes a terrain can be pretty technical.
00:09:49.458 --> 00:09:57.589
So, um, for example, here in Silicon Valley in the Santa Cruz area, um, you know, we can ride through grassy fields or redwood forests.
00:09:58.188 --> 00:10:14.948
Um, you know, we're climbing hills, sometimes we're descending over technical routes and rocks, um, the terrain can sometimes be, um, you know, steep, it can be gnarly, um, sometimes it can get really, really narrow, um, and what we call single track.
00:10:15.298 --> 00:10:20.509
Um, and what we're doing is a lot of times we're descending over these obstacles and features with speed.
00:10:20.969 --> 00:10:28.349
Um, so I'd say, you know, it kind of describes our sport, um, a little bit, you know, it can be mild or it can be pretty technical.
00:10:28.589 --> 00:10:30.389
Sometimes it can be scary to people.
00:10:30.649 --> 00:10:34.448
and what's super great about this sport is we're out there together.
00:10:34.672 --> 00:10:36.211
enjoying the outdoors.
00:10:36.517 --> 00:10:46.006
Enjoying these hills, enjoying the forest, and just, um, you know, watching each other tackle these challenging, uh, obstacles on the trail and being successful at it.
00:10:46.822 --> 00:10:47.113
Yes.
00:10:47.947 --> 00:10:51.230
You're out there riding these beautiful trails.
00:10:51.518 --> 00:10:55.977
we're lucky to have so many of them in the San Francisco Bay Area.
00:10:56.258 --> 00:10:58.077
What is your favorite trail here?
00:10:59.072 --> 00:11:29.668
my favorite trail, it's actually closed right now, but, uh, on the weekdays, um, but my favorite trail is probably, um, what we call Sokol Demonstration Forest, um, out there, um, there, there's a variety of trails, um, there's one trail that's pretty world famous, it's called the Flow Trail, um, a lot of it is human made, um, and it's very flowy, it's a downhill trail, you have to climb, um, Pretty hard to get up there and then it kind of flows through the forest among the trees and it's a single track.
00:11:30.097 --> 00:11:32.707
Um, and it's just an absolutely beautiful trail.
00:11:32.977 --> 00:11:37.937
Um, my favorite trail out there is probably Braille, which is next to the flow trail.
00:11:38.258 --> 00:11:39.538
Um, it's technical.
00:11:39.548 --> 00:11:40.258
It's steep.
00:11:40.258 --> 00:11:44.597
It's got roots and I just love climbing that trail because it's natural.
00:11:44.807 --> 00:11:45.267
it's out there.
00:11:45.267 --> 00:11:45.927
It's beautiful.
00:11:45.927 --> 00:11:46.716
It's hard.
00:11:47.116 --> 00:11:48.866
And it's also just a ton of fun.
00:11:49.438 --> 00:11:52.458
I've been hearing about the Floor Trail for many years.
00:11:52.568 --> 00:12:00.583
Uh, one of these days, I hope to make it down there and, uh, Yeah, maybe, uh, I'd be lucky to have one of you join me on that ride,
00:12:00.889 --> 00:12:01.389
Absolutely.
00:12:02.868 --> 00:12:07.488
I'm a minority male, uh, I'm an Asian male and I often do these sports where.
00:12:08.182 --> 00:12:12.133
Traditionally, they have been dominated by, let's say, uh, white men.
00:12:12.523 --> 00:12:14.722
It's changing for, for the better.
00:12:16.432 --> 00:12:25.971
Seeing women out there whether I'm climbing or, or surfing or whatnot, again, that is changing, but still the representation is not quite there.
00:12:26.591 --> 00:12:35.859
You are an Asian female, which I think is even more rare to find, uh, women, minority women out there, uh, doing these, uh, sports.
00:12:36.711 --> 00:12:57.486
how do you navigate some of the cultural, uh, norms and expectations, with some of your upbringing, with what is expected from you, perhaps, what your family expects from you, um, what your community expects from you, and how do you kind of manage those, expectations people have?
00:12:57.922 --> 00:12:59.731
And, uh, what has been your experience?
00:13:00.231 --> 00:13:05.682
Yeah, um, I have to say, um, yeah, I've never considered myself a sporty person.
00:13:06.371 --> 00:13:10.591
Um, when I was growing up, I actually never did sports in high school or college.
00:13:11.011 --> 00:13:14.062
Um, and I only started mountain biking later in life.
00:13:14.172 --> 00:13:20.611
Um, I grew up in LA, in Los Angeles, and in a very traditional Chinese family.
00:13:21.157 --> 00:13:25.376
Um, you know, my traditional mom taught me not to get too much sun.
00:13:25.386 --> 00:13:26.346
Don't get hurt.
00:13:26.716 --> 00:13:30.876
Don't climb trees, you know, sit with your legs closed, walk like.
00:13:33.006 --> 00:13:34.346
So, um, yeah.
00:13:34.346 --> 00:13:38.407
So when my husband introduced me in a mountain biking, I just felt so empowered.
00:13:38.846 --> 00:13:40.667
Um, and it really made me feel tough.
00:13:40.826 --> 00:13:45.434
So, every time I rode over roots and rocks that I was scared of, I felt really good.
00:13:45.845 --> 00:13:49.424
Um, so I wanted to share that inspiration with other women.
00:13:49.851 --> 00:13:52.922
So now I'm a mountain bike coach for kids and adults.
00:13:52.932 --> 00:13:56.341
Um, and I'm on the board of several mountain biking organizations.
00:13:56.881 --> 00:14:00.731
Um, and my mission is to inspire more girls and women into this sport.
00:14:01.018 --> 00:14:06.793
I started racing in my 40s and started teaching mountain biking, um, in my, in my late 40s.
00:14:07.208 --> 00:14:21.078
and, uh, started racing in my early forties and, um, started teaching in my late forties, and I'm turning 50 this year, and there aren't a lot of older women racing in downhill or enduro, um, which is what I've been doing, um, this year.
00:14:21.614 --> 00:14:27.083
And I think it's really important to continue to see female faces out there on the race course, whether they're Asian or not.
00:14:27.083 --> 00:14:29.504
You know, just seeing women in the sport is great.
00:14:30.010 --> 00:14:38.010
and I have to say, um, so, so a great, uh, mountain biker once told me a quote that mountain biking is a great equalizer.
00:14:38.311 --> 00:14:42.841
And I absolutely love that quote because it doesn't matter what you look like or what you do out there.
00:14:43.120 --> 00:14:44.471
or your level of fitness.
00:14:44.791 --> 00:14:53.291
Um, we all get together and we have so much fun on the trails and we make these lasting friendships and just, we just meet extraordinary women and we support each other.
00:14:53.490 --> 00:14:56.630
So I just absolutely love that sport because of that reason.
00:14:57.384 --> 00:14:58.024
Great answer.
00:14:58.684 --> 00:15:03.504
finally, Jessica, you left a perfectly good career.
00:15:03.960 --> 00:15:05.889
One that we shared a little tenure
00:15:06.159 --> 00:15:06.519
Yeah.
00:15:07.019 --> 00:15:09.549
to take up this cause full time.
00:15:09.600 --> 00:15:12.120
What was maybe one key reason why you did that?
00:15:12.710 --> 00:15:15.690
I have to say my mom probably wouldn't have approved of me doing that.
00:15:16.879 --> 00:15:23.870
My traditional mom, but you know, I've been thinking about this for a while and yes, you're right.
00:15:23.899 --> 00:15:30.230
I mean, yeah, I was, you know, being Paid pretty well and managed a large team.
00:15:30.230 --> 00:15:37.730
And I've been thinking about this for a long time and, you know, I'm hitting my 50, hitting 50 this year.
00:15:38.289 --> 00:15:42.049
And, uh, you know, I thought I should try it, you know, why not just do it?
00:15:42.250 --> 00:15:44.490
I mean, this is something I really believe in.
00:15:44.919 --> 00:15:48.659
Um, you know, while I was working in the corporate world at Airbnb, I had started.
00:15:48.825 --> 00:15:49.904
Teaching already.
00:15:50.215 --> 00:15:54.914
Um, and I've been, you know, with girls rock for about nine years or so.
00:15:54.914 --> 00:16:08.995
And so I kind of knew what I was walking into, but it was also just, um, you know, saying goodbye to something pretty big in my life that took up, I don't know, a huge part of my life walking away from the corporate world and, you know, doing mountain biking full time.
00:16:09.504 --> 00:16:15.235
Um, but yeah, I mean, since I've left the corporate world and taken this up, I'd say I have no regrets at all.
00:16:15.529 --> 00:16:19.149
I absolutely love what I'm doing and I'm just inspired every day by what I do.
00:16:19.895 --> 00:16:25.418
You are evidently touching and influencing people in a very fundamental way.
00:16:26.298 --> 00:16:34.219
And this is a great segue to hear a little bit about Girls Rock, this organization that you just mentioned.
00:16:34.509 --> 00:16:43.961
So maybe turning this over to Alexis, can you tell us first, who are and why did you found Girls Rock.
00:16:44.181 --> 00:16:46.461
And what does Girls Rock do today?
00:16:47.030 --> 00:16:51.380
so my name is Alexis Morgan and I live in Santa Cruz.
00:16:51.660 --> 00:16:55.081
I was not technically the founder of Girls Rock.
00:16:55.081 --> 00:17:00.860
My friend, Jessica Klodnicki founded it when she was running Bell Helmets.
00:17:02.010 --> 00:17:26.026
And the idea was that she would She wanted to get women together to ride bikes, uh, and she was just starting out in her own mountain biking journey and had discovered it and wanted to get more women out there because she thought, um, it would be a way for her to learn how to mountain bike.
00:17:26.505 --> 00:17:32.125
she was right and she continues to mountain bike today, but she had to move away for work.
00:17:32.775 --> 00:17:41.355
And so when she moved away, she handed off the keys to the organization to myself and to a woman named Julianne Klein.
00:17:42.204 --> 00:18:02.369
And together with a bunch of women who were involved in the group already, we decided, really the way to keep this going, When people, you know, inevitably move on and have other things to do is to create a non profit so they would have another life, um, beyond us.
00:18:02.970 --> 00:18:05.049
And that's what we did in 2017.
00:18:05.250 --> 00:18:15.440
And So the whole purpose of Girls Rock is to provide rides and resources to women and female identifying people.
00:18:15.971 --> 00:18:22.741
and we, our core offering is a monthly social no drop ride that's free.
00:18:23.382 --> 00:18:27.616
Uh, it's hosted by various, businesses and Santa Cruz.
00:18:27.737 --> 00:18:35.257
And what we do is we meet at the host and it's usually a restaurant, a brewery or a wine tasting room.
00:18:35.836 --> 00:18:44.936
And we meet there in the morning, we break out into smaller groups by ride level, and then we go out to the trails and we have a great time.
00:18:44.997 --> 00:18:50.626
And when we come back to our cars, we usually stick around for a bit and socialize.
00:18:51.376 --> 00:19:01.196
So that's what we do, and we've been doing that for 10 years in June, so we're really excited that it keeps going.
00:19:01.632 --> 00:19:06.011
Well, early congratulations on your upcoming anniversary.
00:19:06.398 --> 00:19:18.999
I was doing a little bit of research this weekend for our chat this morning, and I happened to chance upon this lovely little video of a group of you guys going out for a ride.
00:19:19.148 --> 00:19:23.696
And, the energy and the excitement was contagious.
00:19:24.325 --> 00:19:36.018
I am wondering If you've had a couple of moments recently where you felt, aha, this is why I do what I do.
00:19:36.928 --> 00:19:52.550
It could be where perhaps you felt transformed personally, or it could be, one of your students or fellow writers go through this big elevating change.
00:19:53.357 --> 00:19:54.857
Would love for you to share.
00:19:55.327 --> 00:20:01.228
so many moments where I'm reminded of, uh, why we do what we do.
00:20:01.768 --> 00:20:08.428
Um, I can't even count the number of times I've said to myself, well, that was totally worth it.
00:20:09.468 --> 00:20:37.394
And usually the scenario involves me guiding a group of women and there's somebody Who's very quiet and they're in the back and they said they were not sure that this was right for them and then by the end of the ride they're smiling and they're giving people high fives and they are totally engaged.
00:20:38.034 --> 00:20:43.544
And, um, participating with, uh, with the rest of the group.
00:20:43.604 --> 00:20:50.084
So I just, I like to see people brought along and realize that, yes, this is for them.
00:20:50.644 --> 00:21:11.673
Uh, the sport isn't necessarily about, getting rad and going fast Be loud and gnarly, um, it, it's perfectly fine to just ride, uh, off road in the dirt and enjoy the trees and the blue sky and hear the birds and be that kind of rider too.
00:21:11.702 --> 00:21:12.073
So,
00:21:12.982 --> 00:21:13.393
Hang on.
00:21:13.393 --> 00:21:21.997
So can, can just anybody like show up if they are female identified and they are interested in mountain biking?
00:21:22.326 --> 00:21:26.336
What is like the, uh, like if somebody is listening to this podcast, it gets inspired.
00:21:26.426 --> 00:21:28.626
Can they just go to your website, sign up for a ride?
00:21:29.436 --> 00:21:32.757
Uh, do they need to have a mountain bike with them?
00:21:32.757 --> 00:21:33.777
Do they need to pay something?
